by Erika Mehlos, GCC member
On Saturday, February 22, I volunteered with the organization Free Mom Hugs at a convention in Milwaukee. I had heard of this organization a few years ago and was excited to support their mission--to offer compassion, love, and hugs to those in the LGBTQ+ community who may feel rejected by their families or community because of their sexual orientation. I could relate to the founder's story of growing up in a conservative church and trying to reconcile the condemnation of gay people while preaching the amazing love of God.

In October 2024, GCC presented a film screening for the documentary Mama Bears, which featured the founder of Free Mom Hugs. The film focuses on a group of women who call themselves “mama bears” because of how fiercely they fight for their LGBTQ+ children’s rights. The film touched my heart in so many ways and strengthened my resolve to make a difference.
I have been struggling this year. It feels like there is so much negativity in the world and not a lot that I can do about it. Volunteering with Free Mom Hugs was my opportunity to do something--to show love and acceptance to a group of people I didn't know. We gave out so many hugs and met some fantastic people. We heard from many people who told us how much they appreciated what we were doing and how much it was needed. It was truly my honor and pleasure to act as a volunteer for this organization.

I strongly encourage all of us to find opportunities to make our communities more welcoming, safe, and inclusive. Showing love and acceptance makes a change in all of our lives.
