On Tuesday, February 4, Germantown Community Coalition hosted Judge Derek Mosley for his lecture "Things Your History Teacher Didn't Teach You." Judge Mosley spoke to a packed audience about the many overlooked or little known contributions of Black people to US history. This incredible event left even the youngest attendees feeling amazed, enlightened, and inspired. We asked 10-year-old Henry a few questions about the event, and here's what he had to say.
Is learning about Black people in history for everyone or just for Black people?
Everybody. Most of the people who attended were not black. And you know what? That gives me a little bit of hope that people actually care about others.
GCC's values are kindness, inclusion, equity, and respect. How did this event connect with those values?
I feel like there was a lot of inclusion because everyone could come to learn. Everybody had respect for the person speaking and for what they heard. It was just nice.

What did you think of the speaker, Judge Derek Mosley?
I'm surprised how much he has impacted so many lives. And I just really admire him. He's a good role model.
What did you think was a lesson from the event?
I felt like the lesson was that there's a lot more than what you were taught in school. They might say that one thing happened, but it's not the whole story.
Do you have a favorite story or fact that you learned?
All the stories he talked about were more interesting than what we learn in school. My favorite was learning about Joshua Glover. It made me feel happy that all those people stood up for someone who was different from them. It made me feel hope.
